Common Desk’s mission is to make days better by creating thoughtful moments, human connections, and a sense of belonging–for all.

Community: Now more than ever, we’re especially committed to the last part of our mission statement: for all. Before we all faced a global pandemic, there was already a loneliness epidemic threatening our society. More than ever before, people are at home, in isolation, and needing others to lean on. Common Desk has an abundant sense of community, and we’re committed to doing all we can to find creative ways to share what we have with all who need it.

Equality: If you can’t already tell, we take the “for all” mentioned above very seriously. We mean it when we say that all types of people are welcome at Common Desk. Whether you’re at one of our coworking spaces, at a company off-site happy hour, or at a Fiction Coffee shop, every person is considered equal by and among our staff, and we will not tolerate any action indicating otherwise. The Common Desk staff strives daily to be energetic, welcoming, tight-knit, and fun. Our staff culture drips from the top down into the culture among our members within our spaces, and it’s the secret sauce to our brand’s overarching success.

Why we exist

We’re firm believers that you don’t have to have four sets of walls in order to have community. Before we ever created our original coworking location in Deep Ellum, we created a physical community of professionals first. Ever since Common Desk opened in 2012, community has been the driving force behind all that we do.

Apart from building community in all spheres, we also specialize in building people-focused coworking locations. Most professionals spend more time with the people they work around than they do with their loved ones. When we aren’t happy at work, other areas of our lives are affected, and employee dissatisfaction at work is at an all-time high. Our coworking spaces exist to help people actually like showing up to the office to do what they do best day-in and day-out.

We believe that both your workspace environment and who you surround yourself with throughout your workweek can make all the difference. Since we first opened in 2012, we’ve seen so many professionals go from hating their job to enjoying it again, all because the context of the above changed when they joined Common Desk.

How we started

Our CEO/Founder, Nick, got his start in commercial real estate, helping companies find the right tenant space. At this point, workspaces were far from collaborative, and the industry was in major need of a cubicle disruption. After discovering the concept of “flexible workspace” on a CRE assignment in 2010, Nick suddenly had a crazy idea– what if office space didn’t have to suck the life out of you? Weeks later, Nick quit his career in CRE to pursue this crazy dream of redefining how professionals experience their workspace, and his vision became a beautiful reality when Common Desk opened its first set of doors in Deep Ellum in October of 2012.

What we create

Common Desk specializes in creating a sense of community that anyone can belong to. We use thoughtful digital practices to connect our virtual members, and we use an intentional approach to the design of our physical spaces to do the same for our workspace members. Our coworking locations are connective, accommodating, and inspiring places that you actually want to show up to day-in and day-out. We incorporate local art, intentional design, strategic partnerships, honest materials, curated events, and great people into every Common Desk coworking space, making a heck of a workspace product when it’s all said and done. But we don’t stop with workspace… We also build beautiful coffee shops and kiosks through Fiction Coffee that let anyone experience our passion for hospitality. Then we power all the above with our custom-built technology to make workdays more thoughtful and convenient.

How we do it

First off, we hire great people. Our brand wouldn’t be anything without the people powering it. Our people pour endless hours inventing thoughtful points of connectivity, whether through community events, member groups, or what we call “surprise and delight” to help our members connect to a sense of professional community. Secondly, we constantly push the envelope on how our amenities and offerings can change the game of any given workday. Like coffee–we don’t just offer any ‘ole cup of joe in our spaces. We created our very own coffee brand, Fiction Coffee, to ensure that every coffee served in our space or at our flagship store is given with a human touchpoint and genuine hospitality. Wellness is another passion of ours, and we try to incorporate community workouts, sit-stand desks, and treadmill desks in our spaces so that our members can get up and moving through the day. And the cherry on top of all the above is the technology we use to power our spaces. Our members can connect with our offerings and people at the push of a button, making for the perfect workday secret sauce.
